This past Friday (Feb 4), The Revs aka the priests of the Diocese of San Jose and the Sems aka the seminarians from St. Patrick’s seminary squared off in a basketball game at the Santa Clara University Leavey Center. It was an electric atmosphere that resembled a college game. An estimated total of 2000 parishioners, fans, friends and family packed the arena. The evening started with the singing of the National Anthem and the Salve Regina. The local middle school band provided the music throughout the game. The half-time free throw giveaways were sponsored by Tony and Alba’s pizza (has become one of my favorite pizza spots in the area)!
One of my favorite moments of the evening was when I got to perform my rap song “Fiat” for the people. I cherished this moment because I was able to share two of my passions, faith and rap.
The game itself was very entertaining. The Sems had the lead throughout the game but the Revs did come back within 1 point late in 4th quarter. The game came down to defense and free throws. By the end of the night the Sems were victories!
It was an amazing night, and one I’ll remember forever. All our hard work in practice each night paid off during the big game. I am happy for our win because it has also boosted up the morale around the seminary. The priests, sisters, professors, staff and seminarians are very proud of this years victory. We ended the two year losing streak and hope to continue winning in the years to come.
