Today (Feb 3) the Church in Honduras celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Suyapa. In the 1700s the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant farm worker named Alejandro. He was on his way back home from a full days work but he didn’t make it home in time before nightfall. Alejandro decided to sleep in a dry river bed and continue his trip home in the morning. As he was falling asleep he felt a sharp poke on his back. He took the item and threw it away, then went back to sleep. Shortly after that, he felt the same poke on his back. He took the item and threw it away. This happened three or four times, on the last time he put the item in his bag. When he arrived home the next morning, Alejandro’s mother found the item to be a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was ecstatic because the Blessed Mother appeared to her son. She put the statue of the Virgin on her altar in the house. The neighborhood villagers soon found out and started praying at their house. Many miracles came through her intercession. People were healed of their sicknesses, physical aliments, and a war between El Salvador and Honduras was stopped!
There is a Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Suyapa in the capital of Tegucigalpa. I visited this beautiful Basilica on recent trip to Honduras in 2010. It was a dream come true for me to visit and see this church. I gave thanks to God for allowing me to finish my first half of seminary studies and allowing me to continue on in formation towards the priesthood.
Our Lady of Suyapa holds a very special and deep place in my heart! Maybe it’s because Honduras and it’s people also holds a place in my heart. The special thing about Our Lady is she’s always there to guide us to her Son at every moment in our life. No matter where we are in our spiritual journey, Our Lady can always bring us closer to Jesus. That is her role in our lives, to bring us closer to Christ and Christ closer to us. Ultimately, that is my hope for my life.
Oh beautiful and humble Mother Mary, you appeared to Alejandro during his time of need and difficulties. In his daily routine of life, you were united with him in his sufferings and struggles. You showed him not only your love but the love of your Son Jesus Christ.
Today on your feast day, I humbly come to you seeking your intercession, seeking your help, seeking your Son. Please grant everything we need for this day in order to follow your Son, Our Savior.
Our Lady of Suyapa, pray for us!
